According to its vendor, Shopware 6 is a commerce platform for B2B and B2C based on open source. By default, customers host and run it themselves, for example on their own cloud infrastructure; alternatively, it can run in environments that the vendor hosts.

The vendor says that reworking Shopware 5, which was built as a single large block of code, would have been far more complex, more error-prone and therefore considerably more expensive, so Shopware 6 was written from scratch. It adds that Shopware 6 uses the Symfony framework throughout. On 16 August 2022, shopware AG [announced](https://www.shopware.com/de/news/shopware-5-so-geht-es-weiter/) (in German) that support for Shopware 5, which had been available since 27 April 2015, was to run until July 2024, and that there would be no version 5.8. For a move from version 5, Shopware's migration assistant shows whether the installed plugins are also available for Shopware 6 and whether their configuration can be carried over.

Our work with Shopware 5 is limited to the long-term maintenance of existing shops; we never start new projects on it. Our own Shopware 5 shops include rasensamen-kaufen.de and rollenrampe.de. When a change of platform is due and makes economic sense for the shop owner, we help move the shop to Shopify. We do not offer Shopware 6.
